We're still figuring this out. As much as we would like to keep this app entirely free, infrastructure and development come at a cost. What we can try to promise is financial transparency. We consciously hedge here with "try" because the world is messy.

That said, our north star, as outlined in our values, remains the same: people over profit. That is, we are focused on maximizing benefits for stakeholders — our users, contributors, and communities — rather than shareholders. We might be shooting ourselves in the foot here, but it is a risk we are willing to take.

To this end, we've defined two key principles:

  1. User experience first: Delivering a thoughtful, reliable, and evolving experience means hiring developers and scaling our infrastructure. Quality costs money, and we want to make sure that investment goes directly toward improving what you use and love.
  2. Sustainable growth: We draw inspiration from projects like Low Tech Magazine, a completely solar-powered website. While a completely solar-powered app may not be feasible for us right now, due to uptime and performance needs, we're committed to working towards this future.

In order to accomplish these goals, we are considering the following paths for profit:

  • In-App Purchases – Pay to expand your region, unlock premium stories, or host and preserve your data long-term.
  • Sponsored Locations – Local businesses can pay to feature stories.
  • Licensing Agreements – If your stories get enough traction, we'll work with you to develop them further and share in the success.
  • Data Collection – With permission, aggregated public stories could be used to create a larger dataset (never personal data, and never sold to advertisers).

No monetization strategies are set in stone. We are thinking out loud and are receptive to feedback. Our goal is to build something meaningful and make concerted decisions every step of the way. Send Email

So you saw the demo and had questions about the unfold feature. We are here to get people to write and not necessarily to get the language models to generate more slop. Unfold is a feature that will evolve significantly. We envision our AI assistant, andi, to be more of an editor that offers suggestions. It will highlight words, phrases, sentences, but will not write your story for you. Where is the fun in that! We will keep the demo as it stands for now but during launch, you can bet that unfold will feel completely different or it might be crumpled up and tossed entirely.

You probably also thought, "those AI generated voice overs are unbearable!"" We agree. It's a demo and this is something we want to figure out. In the long term we would like to have voice cloning available with a way to modulate emotion. This is a feature you will be completely be able to opt out of. We get it. We too are spooked by some random company having access to sound just like us. But we also understand that someone doesn't want to narrate their edits over and over again.

Unequivocally NO.

This is an opinionated app, and expanding into other media doesn't align with our vision. Here's why:

  • Attention matters: Visual media competes with your awareness of the physical world. We don't want that distraction.
  • Sustainability: Hosting images and video is expensive and would make it harder for us to build this app in a sustainable way.
  • Better alternatives exist: Plenty of apps already focus on photos and video. Plus many of them already track your location.
As with any project, there isn't just one reason this came to be. In fact there are many: missing friends while traveling, feeling disconnected with one's own city, chasing romance, and just being amazed at how well people can craft stories. But mostly, we've always been obsessed with storytelling. The way it brings us together. The way it makes us feel understood. The way it makes us feel creative. We've seen stories unfold over countless mediums. This project explores stories unfolding through space. So let's go. Allez. Mu je. Vamos. Πάμε. Auf gehts. Enhid. Kom op. Ikou. Gaja. Zǒu ba. Yalla. Andiamo!
